Android to iphone

Yes, it’s crazy but it happened.

A few weeks ago I bought an iphone. The very first I actually own. I’ve used one for/from work for many years, but I was a dedicated Android user ever since the HTC G1 / Dream came out in 2009 (in the Netherlands). Yes, that long.

I went from HTC to Samsung, to something else, to Fairphone.

Why the change? After putting a non-Google OS on the Fairphone (Calyx OS) things were well until there was an upgrade to that. That upgrade buggered up the phone to the extent that most apps weren’t working any more. And to the extent that putting the original Android from Fairphone back on it. That ticked me off in a major way, because these days, a phone is almost as necessary as legs and eyes, unless you’re happy under your rock.

As it happened, in June I was in Athens (Greece), to visit colleagues, and so I used the (XS) iphone from work a lot, and found out that it’s a pretty decent system. The XS is just too small for me to usable. To cool off my Android disaster, I went looking for a refurbished Iphone and found one. I now have an iphone 16 plus, which is exactly the right size, and so far it’s worked really well for me.

It’s even a lot faster than anything on android I’ve experienced, barely lagging in apps that communicate with peripherals (e.g. my Bluesound Node device).

Have I found drawbacks? Not many. The latest is that I do miss Fdroid, an alternate appstore. If that’s all I run into, that’s fine.

And yes, many people who know me were stunned to learn about my iphone move…
