Obsidian-Nextcloud-iphone

A while ago I switched from an Android phone to an iphone. That switch went smoother than I had expected.

I use Obsidian for my notes and stuff. There is a great phone application (yes, app is short for application!) for both Android and iOS, and things worked well. Then I decided to cancel Obsidian's 'Sync' subscription to use my Nextcloud service, and lo and behold, things went south on the iphone.

The iphone only supports Obsidian's Sync feature or icloud. This should not be surprising.

Now the good thing is that Obsidian files are merely text files in Markdown. As I know the structure of my Obsidian vault (I created it myself), I figured that all I needed was a decent text editor for the iphone and I could edit files on there. Viewing files on the phone is no problem, there is a text viewer, so that was easy.

The challenge was finding a good text editor for something apple that doesn't drown me in advertisement. This is important for me; I despise advertisement with a vengeance.

It took me a while to discover Runestone. The free version has no advertising and is quite complete. If you need to program or write complete HTML and do other complicated stuff on your phone ( 🤷‍♂️ ), then there is a purchase option of €10 to unlock the whole thing. Now I don't want to do all the difficult bits and bobs on a telephone.  Even the iphone 16+ is not big enough for my old face to do things like that, but I did buy the extended options, to support the programmer of this application. It is a wonderful text editor, very easy to use, and the fact I do NOT have to pay to get rid of ads is worth that for me.

In case you're curious: look at the Apple Appstore and give it a spin.

You can find the creator of Runestone on Mastodon at Simon Støvring.

And if you're into games: he is close to releasing one called 'Wavy Road'. It's up for pre-order at the moment.
